What Is It?

Carnitine Deficiency is a group of diseases that intervenes with the processing of food to fats.

Symptoms

Symptoms of this disease includes stiff muscles, weak hips, shoulders, upper arms and legs.
Neck and Jaw muscles may become weak in more serious cases of Carnitine Deficiency along
with low blood sugar, fatigue, vomiting, slow growth, brain function abnormalities and enlarged
liver. If a case gets too serious, the deficiency will start to effect other tissues.

What Causes This Deficiency?

Genetic mutation is the main cause of this deficiency. Carnitine is used to transport fatty acids
from the membrane of mitochondria to the mitochondrial matrix during the breakdown of fats for
energy to be used by a body's metabolism through the citric acid cycle. If there is not enough
Carnitine in our bodies, fatty acids are not able to be broken down to be used for metabolic
energy, causing one's metabolism to become slow in speed.

What Helps Carnitine Deficiency?

This deficiency may also come along if you are not eating the right things. A diet is very important
for someone who was a Carnitine Deficiency. Meats such as ground beef, bacon, pork and chicken
carry a vital amount of carnitine to our bodies. Without a sufficient supply for a period of time, our
bodies will not be able to undergo most metabolic reactions. Dietary supplements can be purchased
without a prescription for those that have either a genetic problem or a dietary problem.
